Description

Digital transformation is one of the hottest topics in industry today. End-users are expecting a tremendous benefit and thus cost reduction in maintenance, but also expecting better insights and optimization potential into their production processes. System vendors as well as machine builders expect to enrich their product by digitally supported services.

In process industry plant downtimes are often critical and state a major cost factor across all industries and processes. Around five percent of the whole production capacity remains unused due to unexpected down times. Up to 40 % and more of this loss of production is induced by outage of field devices.

Pumps are an integral component, the driving force, in any process plant. But still, while online diagnostics is state-of-the-art for sensors and actuators, pumps mostly remain unmonitored.

Today, common practice to avoid unplanned plant downtimes, preventive maintenance is applied. That means that maintenance work is scheduled during planned shutdowns. This reduces or even avoids downtimes due to asset failure, but increases primary maintenance cost.

Predictive maintenance is a strategy for optimizing downtimes and cost for wear parts as well as labor. Additional information already available in the process is unveiled and enriched by historic data and intelligence in order to draw conclusions on the health of a certain asset and thereby predict the point in time when maintenance work is required. This enables planning revisions optimally.

In typical production processes usually only information relevant for process control is available. The additional information available on assets can now also be used for process optimization.

Another cost driver is plant asset and supply chain management including warehousing, procurement, and field device service – all this in conjunction with maintenance cycles of the production process itself.

In this presentation a concept for plant asset and service management in the field of progressive cavity (PC) pumps and their applications enabling reliable and efficient plant management. Novel spare parts and pump management, together with an intelligent and communicating PC pump is presented as a holistic predictive maintenance concept. This concept incorporates several departments within the end users’ organization and fosters collaboration and efficient work flows supported by the suppliers’ historic data and IP – horizontally and vertically within the value-added chains.
